Expansion of the Mayfair Sign & Triangle Plaza

Expansion of the Mayfair Sign & Triangle Plaza

Today, I had the pleasure of meeting with Robin Kohles of the Philadelphia Community Design Collaborative, regarding our design grant to enhance the plaza at the Triangle. Ms. Kohles, prior to our meeting, contacted Kelly Yemen of the Philadelphia Office of Transportation, as well as Larissa Klevan, of the Philadelphia Planning Commission, respectively. Both Kelly and Larissa confirmed the pending PennDOT study of the Avenue, and provided their support, insight and guidance on how to develop the plaza area to make it the social hub of Mayfair. I was pleased to hear that Ms. Kohles already received positive reports about our plans, and I was able to amplify of vision to include nostalgic references to Mayfair (Mayfair Movie Theater), as well as to honor our sports fans who congregate at Frankford and Cottman Avenues to celebrate a championship. In addition, I believe that local art can be featured, as well as vendors of food and coffee/beverages. We will extend the sidewalk(s) on both sides of Ryan Avenue. By doing so, we bring more people to the area, make the adjacent storefronts more desirable, and create a buzz that extends outside of Mayfair.

Ms. Kohles was enthusiastic about our plans, and even considered including the four-corners of Frankford and Cottman Avenues. However, we decided, after input from Kelly and Larissa, that we should hold off on expanding our design grant at this time, pending the outcome of the PennDOT studies since we want to see the larger proposed/suggested changes for Frankford Avenue. However, Robin and I both felt that we did not need to delay the design grant process for the plaza while we await completion of the Avenue studies.
