05 Jan A Letter from Executive Director Donny Smith
I can’t think of a better word to use to describe our efforts to bring customers, both new and old, back to our corridors to “Shop Mayfair” this year.
In 2023, the Mayfair BID board decided to try something completely new and out of the box with our Seward Johnson Art Exhibit, and the word “homerun” once again popped into my head. On the very first day while the installation was taking place, I met a family that came to Mayfair all the way from Delaware to watch the placement of each statue. The family had heard the exciting news about the exhibit coming to Mayfair while touring Seward Johnson’s Grounds for Sculpture earlier in the year, and they wanted to come to Mayfair to watch the magic happen. From that day forward, we saw a steady stream of new faces along our corridors who came to Mayfair to view the exhibit, participate in our “selfie contest,” and shop while they were here. The entire exhibit was a huge success, from the first to the last day!
We were blessed with beautiful weather in 2023, and as a result, we successfully hosted all five of our Mayfair Third Thursday Night Markets, complete with a fun and exciting lineup of new entertainment for people of every age. Several of our business owners were able to participate this year, which was awesome as connecting businesses with customers, both new and old, is the primary purpose of the Mayfair Night Markets.
Sadly, the Phillies didn’t make it into the World Series in 2023; however, we successfully lured the Phillies Bus to our very own “Times Square” at Cottman & Frankford to cheer the Phillies on as they advanced in the Playoffs. The event was another huge success as it also drew crowds from all over the tristate area right here to Mayfair.
With the Father Judge baseball team and the St. Huberts cheerleaders winning championship titles this year, we decided to honor both teams during one of our Mayfair Night Markets. The event drew a very large crowd of residents and visitors to participate in the celebration and to experience first-hand just how much fun it is right here in Mayfair!
The Annual Mayfair-Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade strolled down Frankford Avenue for the 46th time in 2023, and it was a huge success! The Parade drew a very large crowd consisting of residents, new and old, back to Frankford Avenue to not only experience the magic of the Parade but also to give them the opportunity to reconnect with each other and to give the kids an opportunity to personally deliver their letters to Santa. It was a great day!
Our Tree Lighting, the Mayfair Christmas Decoration Contest, and the Mayfair Christmas Decoration Trolley Tour were all “home runs” as well!
With the success of everything mentioned above, I’m happy to report that we’re planning to do it all over again in 2024, hopefully with World Series and Superbowl wins this time. We’ve also got our sights set on doing even more cleaning and greening in 2024, which, once completed, should make our entire corridor look even more attractive to residents and visitors alike.
Continuing to work with our amazing group of city agencies, our elected officials, the Mayfair Civic Association, and the Mayfair Community Development Corporation, together we will ensure that Mayfair will always be a Great Place to Visit and an Awesome Place to Live!
